“Carrie Soto Is Back” Book Review

By Alyssa Riley

If you are a fan of the fantastic “Daisy Jones & The Six” or “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo,”  you will not be disappointed to hear that author, Taylor Jenkins Reid, has released another novel that is impossible to put down.

Reid, The Number One New York Times Bestselling Author, released her newest fiction masterpiece, “Carrie Soto Is Back,”  August 30, and the book world has taken to it like a fish to water.

Unlike any other, this novel, Reid’s ninth, is a gripping tale about dedication, adventure, love, loss and the cost of greatness in the world of competition and fame.

The main character, Carrie Soto, has spent her entire life perfecting her craft in the game of tennis. Her father, Javier Soto, was something of a tennis legend back in his day, as well. After his retirement, he dedicated the rest of his life to making Carrie the best player in the world.

Every single day of her childhood is spent polishing her backhand, approach, drop shot, forehand and the move she becomes most known for, her ace. School is done online, weekends are spent on the court and friendships are non-existent – every moment is dedicated to tennis.

Because of their persistence and work ethic, it all works out in her favor.

Quickly becoming the best player in the entire world, Carrie is coined “the Battle-Axe” for her regal demeanor and hardcore persona. She shatters every record in the books and claims 20 Grand Slam titles.

She has earned it all and has no intention of backing down, that is until she tears her ACL and is forced to retire after a gruesome surgery.

Five years later, her record is matched by Nicki Chan, a brutal and stunningly fast player.

At this moment, when Carrie’s entire career and reputation as the best player in the world are on the line, she decides to come out of retirement to defend the title that she believes will always belong to her.

This novel takes readers along with its rollercoaster of emotions, from heartbreak due to familial loss to awe at the capabilities of Carrie.

It is a book that causes real, personal worry; will she win her title back? Will she finally allow herself to want something outside of winning and being the best?

If you haven’t read it yet, ‘Carrie Soto Is Back’ is a book that must be picked up, and trust me, you won’t be able to stop reading.

Even if tennis does not entice you, this book showcases the beautifully intense game in a way that even the greatest detester can appreciate.

Do not hesitate to do whatever you have to do to get this book into your hands – you won’t regret it. Taylor Jenkins Reid “Is Back” and the book world is thanking her with each turn of a page.
